The Mystery Cars were originally a Hot Wheels mail in offer in which the car received was left a mystery. In 2005, as part of the 10th Anniversary Treasure Hunt celebration, Mattel offered four mystery cars, each car came with a voucher. Collect all four vouchers and you would receive an exclusive 13th Treasure Hunt Volkswagen Drag Bus . The four vouchers completed a picture of the Drag Bus.

- VW Bug
- Baja Bug
- Drag Truck
- New Beetle Cup
Each of these castings would be later found in the 10 Pack Kar Keepers with modified tampo.
There has been a great amount of speculation about decoding the numbers on the mystery cars to identify what is inside. Until 2010 the only way to see any of the car inside was to open them. This has resulted in a rash of packages being opened in the stores. The 2010 Mystery packaging includes a small hole in the back to help mitigate this problem.
Mystery cars started in 2005 as part of a mail-in promotion. However, they didn't really get going until 2007, when they were introduced to the mainline models.However 2010 will unfortunately, be their final appearance as a series. How do you know if you have found a mystery car? First, the card will have a black stripe on the right side, extending from the top of the card to the bottom of the card.
