Auto-City

Description[]

Mattel acquired the Corgi Toys Ltd. brand and assets from a buyout negotiation in 1989^[1] due to the similarities that both brands shared in designing and producing diecast models. The brand name was retained and remained separate from Hot Wheels for a number of years while toolings were moved to China. Various ‘Corgi Juniors’ models were issued under the “Corgi Auto-City" (1991-1993) series.

In 1994 Hot Wheels begun changing the packaging and retooling the baseplates of these models to have “Hot Wheels” branding, which led to some “Hot Wheels Auto-City” (1994) packs having a mixture of models with Hot Wheels and Corgi logos on their bases and varying packaging artwork. This series was commonly available across Europe and Canada.

Castings that debuted in this series went on to be used in the Auto-City Action Squad series of play sets and other lines.

Included on this page will only be the “Hot Wheels Auto-City” (1994) packaging variations.

Some of these castings never received names from Hot Wheels. Names given by Corgi Toys will be used to refer to these models.

Two lines of 1:43 scale Corgi models were later released under Hot Wheels branding. For information on those lines, see Corgi Collection (1995) and Turbos Collection (1996).

All single packs had an item number of 93176 and 93177 (early 1994) or 93171 and 93182 (late 1994).

Superhaulers[]

In 1995 the decision was made to integrate the remaining stock of Corgi Toys Superhaulers trucks into the Hot Wheels range. All eight models of this assortment were only known to have had “Corgi” on their bases.
