Description
The rare sedan delivery version of the Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback. The first use was released as Custom '69 Volkswagen Variant, but it has been issued as the Squareback since. The Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback was sold alongside the mechanically similar and successful sports car theVolkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe and was originally based on the Volkswagen 1300 Beetle, which also served as the base for the Volkswagen Kombinationwagen T2 Transporter.
The Squareback was the Estate car version of the Volkswagen Type 3, with the 'Squareback' name only being used as the model name in the U.S., whereas in a Video made by Shannon's Club (The Car club branch of Shannon's Insurance Australia) reveals that in Australia, the term 'Squareback' purely referred to the body type.
This Hot Wheels depicts a commercial delivery wagon variation of the Squareback. In reality, the panel version is the rarest of all versions of the Volkswagen Type 3, with the panel version produced only in Germany and Australia, where the VW type 3 range enjoys a particularly strong cult following.
Whether or not the Hot Wheels casting depicts the Australian-made or German version centers around whether or not an Australian-made models were made for and sold in markets with left-hand drive (LHD) cars. The front and rear bumpers on the Hot Wheels casting have no bumper guards, which was a feature of the 1500 'N' Squarebacks ('N' standing for 'Normal'). The Australian version was based on the 1500 'N' body and had no bumper guards on the front or rear.
